The 2025 South African wine grape harvest is progressing well, with early reports indicating both an improvement in yield and exceptional fruit quality. Favorable weather conditions, including a cold, wet winter followed by a moderate spring, have contributed to healthy vine growth and well-balanced fruit development.
Early forecasts suggest that the 2025 crop will be comparable to the 2023 harvest of 1.183 million tonnes, which was the second smallest in the past two decades. This marks an improvement over the previous year's record-low yield.
Winemakers are observing remarkable fruit expression and vibrant freshness, particularly in red grape varieties, which are showing excellent acidity, deep color, and strong tannin development. Rico Basson, CEO of South Africa Wine, emphasized the significance of this year's harvest, stating that it showcases the skill, resilience, and dedication of the industry.
The industry celebrated its 366th year at the annual Wine Harvest Commemorative Event on February 6, 2025, at Groot Constantia. This event honored the rich history of South African wine and recognized key contributors through various awards.
Overall, the 2025 harvest is poised to reinforce South Africa's position as a producer of high-quality wines on the global stage.
