New Zealand Harvest 2025 ongoing

Updated: Apr 2

As of March 31, 2025, New Zealand's wine regions are in the midst of the 2025 grape harvest, which typically spans from February to May. This season presents a complex scenario shaped by both promising natural conditions and significant market challenges.

Favorable Growing Conditions

The 2025 season began with high inflorescence initiation and an excellent flowering period for Sauvignon Blanc, particularly in Marlborough. These factors contributed to the potential for a substantial crop. However, a cooler January tempered these expectations, and forecasts suggest a moderate summer ahead. Viticulturists have proactively managed yields through methods such as cane cutting and mechanical thinning to ensure grape quality and mitigate disease risks associated with potential late-season rainfall.

Market Dynamics and Surplus Management

Despite the promising vineyard conditions, the industry faces challenges due to wine surpluses from previous abundant harvests and fluctuating global demand. Wineries and growers are collaborating closely to align production with market needs, emphasizing the importance of balancing supply to maintain profitability. This cooperation includes strategic yield reductions and careful inventory management to address the current oversupply and navigate the complexities of international markets.
